Recently, Ton Nu Khanh Quynh, a student from the 2019 cohort in the Software Engineering department, successfully published a paper at the KSE 2023 scientific conference. Quynh's efforts and achievements have somewhat helped break the gender stereotypes in the eyes of many regarding women in the IT field.
With the paper titled "Comprehensive System for Facilitating Professional Growth by Linking Mentees and Mentors in Information Technology," Quynh made her mark at the KSE 2023 scientific conference.
Originally a perfectionist, Quynh faced difficulties in finding a mentor to accompany her in her academic and career development. Through her research, Quynh discovered that her friends also encountered challenges in this aspect. This motivated Quynh to explore and conduct research with the goal of providing a comprehensive solution to optimize the connection process and create a comprehensive working environment for both mentors and mentees.
To balance her time, Quynh meticulously established a detailed daily schedule. "I start my day at 4 AM to read research materials and draft papers. Eight hours later, I dedicate my time to working at the technology company. After work, I allocate time to work on my thesis," Quynh explained.
Maintaining this strict schedule demanded discipline and rigorous time management. Quynh emphasized that even a slight deviation could disrupt the entire day's schedule. Therefore, she had to ensure that everything ran according to plan. By persistently adhering to her principles, Quynh successfully achieved both her goals: conducting scientific research and completing her thesis.
For students, having a paper published at an international conference is a significant milestone. This research opened up numerous opportunities for collaboration with experts and researchers in the information technology field for Quynh. This success will likely lead to new opportunities in her academic, professional, and research endeavors.
Addressing the various opinions surrounding women pursuing IT, Quynh holds a positive outlook. She believes that female students have many advantages in the IT field, such as strong soft skills, effective communication, and teamwork. Quynh sees women as a refreshing force in the traditionally perceived technical and dry environment of the IT industry. She emphasizes meticulousness, attention to detail, and diligence as additional qualities that women bring to the field.
However, Quynh acknowledges the challenges that female students may face, especially in terms of technical knowledge. Technical fields demand high levels of logical thinking, systematic analysis, and, particularly in IT, proficiency in programming, research, and quick learning. Quynh suggests that female students who are unfamiliar with these aspects may face initial difficulties but believes that with a calm and strategic approach to learning, these challenges can be overcome.
Despite the increasing number of female students at UIT compared to previous years, gender stereotypes regarding the pursuit of IT still persist. Quynh encourages female students to listen to themselves, determine their direction, and not be influenced by external opinions.
Quynh herself faced numerous criticisms and suggestions to choose more dynamic fields with greater social interaction. However, her resilience allowed her to selectively listen and maintain her initial decision.
On the journey to overcoming gender stereotypes, the support of family, teachers, and the University is indispensable. Quynh expresses gratitude to those who have always supported and encouraged young women like her to "think boldly, act boldly" and achieve excellent results.
