Nguyen Tien Toan: The Journey to Korea’s Prestigious Government Scholarship
With an insatiable passion for exploration, relentless effort, and an unwavering desire to learn, Nguyen Tien Toan, a 2021 alumnus of the Faculty of Computer Engineering at the University of Information Technology (UIT), has proudly been awarded the Global Korea Scholarship (GKS) by the Korean government to pursue his academic research ambitions.
UIT: Where Global Dreams Begin
Reflecting on his time at UIT, Toan describes it as a period filled with self-created opportunities for growth and experience. From academic competitions like UIT Car Racing and GenAI Bosch Challenge to extracurricular activities such as football, Green Summer Campaign, and Spring Volunteer Program, Toan immersed himself fully.
“Although I didn’t achieve many accolades in these competitions, to me, they were invaluable platforms to sharpen my programming skills, enhance teamwork, and most importantly, pursue my passions,” Toan shared.
The greatest gift UIT gave him was a shift in mindset. What once seemed like a distant dream—studying abroad—became an attainable goal, thanks to the mentorship of UIT’s faculty and seniors who generously shared their knowledge and experiences. Equipped with a solid academic foundation, language skills, and newfound confidence, Toan believed he was ready to thrive on an international stage.

Embarking on a New Journey in the Land of the Morning Calm
Through sheer determination, Toan completed his undergraduate program half a year early, granting him ample time to prepare his application for a Master’s degree in Korea.
The GKS scholarship, a fully-funded opportunity offered by the Korean government to outstanding international students, became his gateway to academic excellence.
“Korea is a powerhouse in information technology, home to global giants like Samsung and LG. Moreover, the strategic partnership between Vietnam and Korea spans multiple fields. I believe studying here will not only foster my personal growth but also strengthen the bond between our nations,” Toan explained.
Overcoming Challenges with Resilience
The journey to securing the scholarship was no easy feat. Months of rigorous selection, intense competition from talented candidates worldwide, and the pressures of interviews and documentation tested his resolve. Yet, with guidance from professors and seniors in the Faculty of Computer Engineering, Toan gained clarity, direction, and the confidence to succeed.
Looking Ahead
In the short term, Toan aims to absorb knowledge from Korea’s advanced educational environment, connect with international peers, and establish himself in the research community. Long-term, he aspires to contribute to the technology sector, particularly in semiconductors—a field with immense potential in Vietnam and globally.

Advice to Future Students
“Focus on excelling in your coursework—it’s the foundation for your academic and professional journey. But don’t limit yourself to textbooks. Engage with tech forums, study-abroad communities, and semiconductor research groups in Vietnam. Seek guidance from teachers and seniors—their experiences are treasures you won’t find in any syllabus. By embracing diverse perspectives, you’ll refine your skills and grow beyond boundaries.”
Nguyen Tien Toan’s story is a testament to how passion, perseverance, and the right opportunities can turn dreams into reality. His journey continues to inspire the next generation of UIT students to aim high and embrace every opportunity.
