On the morning of March 22nd, at Hall A, the University of Information Technology, Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City, hosted a talkshow with the theme "Agents and Avatars in the Metaverse". Attending the event were Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Luu Thuy Ngan, Vice President of University of Information Technology (UIT), along with lecturers and students from UIT and the University of Social Sciences and Humanities.
Professor Toru Ishida, Honorary Professor of Kyoto University and IEEE Fellow, was also present. He served as the President of IEICE from 2021 to 2022 and was a member of the Science Council of Japan from 2011 to 2017. Professor Ishida has been working in the field of "Autonomous Agents and Multi-Agent Systems" since 1988. He has contributed to the establishment of leading conferences in this field and served as the General Chair of the first AAMAS conference in 2002. He has led several research projects, such as "Digital City Kyoto and the Language Grid". He has been a visiting professor at the Technical University of Munich, Paris 6 University, the University of Maryland, Shanghai Jiao Tong University... and was awarded the Distinguished Professor of Science at HKBU in 2014.
During the seminar, Professor Toru Ishida shared interesting knowledge about previous research on agents (software entities in virtual space) and avatars (digitized forms in virtual space controlled by humans). Discussions were also held on future research on agents and avatars in the virtual world. Research on the impact of the virtual world on humans has been analyzed through controlled experiments. Important social issues have been explored through interdisciplinary experiments. In practical terms, community building in large online networks, experiential tourism, and similar activities have been implemented. In the field of education, courses on computer features and content creation have begun at some universities. Professor Toru Ishida believes: "Expectations of rapid prosperity may quickly fade, but solid data such as virtual reality glasses show that breakthroughs in the virtual world will come in the near future. This may be the right time to start education and research on the virtual world at universities. Interdisciplinary activities can be organized to provide lectures, develop content, and accumulate research results."
