Dr. Huynh Van Dang: Continuing an Academic Journey from Where It Began
A former student of the University of Information Technology, Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City (UIT), Dr. Huynh Van Dang has pursued a steadfast academic journey from domestic lecture halls to international research environments. Returning to UIT after periods of study and research in the United Kingdom and Canada, he continues to strive for a balanced integration of theory and practice, contributing to the development of a dynamic and resilient generation of technology students.
From UIT Student to an International Academic Pathway
An alumnus of the Information Security program, Huynh Van Dang remained at UIT as a researcher after completing his undergraduate studies, while simultaneously pursuing a Master’s degree in Computer Science and embarking on an academic research career.
Driven by a desire to broaden his scholarly horizons, he spent nearly a year preparing his application before officially commencing his doctoral studies at Queen’s University Belfast (United Kingdom) in January 2021.
“The initial stage of my PhD was very challenging, as I shifted my focus from applied, experimental research to more theoretical and fundamental studies. I had to fill significant knowledge gaps while also keeping up with emerging trends in the field. The dedicated guidance of my supervisor and senior colleagues was invaluable. Thanks to their support, I was able to complete my doctoral program ahead of schedule, and my dissertation was awarded the University’s Best PhD Thesis of the Year.”
Following the successful defense of his doctoral dissertation, Dr. Huynh Van Dang undertook postdoctoral research at Memorial University of Newfoundland (Canada). His research focuses on computer networks, wireless communication systems, and the Internet of Things (IoT).
From his early years as a student, he had pursued research projects with strong practical applications in IoT systems. His time in the United Kingdom, however, enabled him to delve deeply into theoretical problems in fundamental research—an experience that broadened and strengthened his academic foundation.
Upon returning to UIT as a lecturer in the Department of Computer Networks, Faculty of Computer Networks and Communications, Dr. Huynh Van Dang aims to harmonize these two approaches—translating theoretical research outcomes into practical systems. He believes this direction is particularly well suited to UIT students.
Accompanying Students on Their Research Journey
Reflecting on his decision to return to UIT for his academic career, Dr. Huynh Van Dang shared that his longstanding connection to the University since his student days fostered a deep sense of belonging and alignment with its environment.
“I see that UIT is creating many favorable conditions for young faculty members to grow. Numerous programs encourage scientific publications and research projects, as well as opportunities for domestic and international collaboration and networking, are available to young lecturers.”
After spending time in the classroom, what has impressed him most is the dynamism, eagerness to learn, and readiness to explore new ideas among UIT students. To him, this energy defines a youthful, enthusiastic, and constantly evolving UIT community.
Beyond teaching, the former UIT student remains actively engaged in research activities, supervising students in research projects, capstone assignments, and graduation theses. He also contributes to updating course syllabi and developing new courses to keep pace with technological trends and introduce emerging research directions to students.
In addition, the UiTiOt research group—of which he is a member—organizes weekly academic seminars that provide a forum for lecturers and students to share and discuss specialized research topics. His involvement in peer-reviewing for reputable scientific journals and maintaining research collaborations both domestically and internationally enables him to stay abreast of new developments and expand research opportunities for himself and his students.
For Dr. Huynh Van Dang, the best way for students not only to excel academically but also to adapt swiftly to the rapid evolution of the IT field is clear:
“Students should make the most of their time at university to build a solid foundation of knowledge. They should proactively develop essential skills such as creativity and problem-solving, intellectual curiosity and lifelong learning, emotional intelligence (EQ), and communication and collaboration skills.”
In the field of information technology, he believes, a strong foundation combined with a readiness to adapt will ensure that students are not overwhelmed by waves of technological change. Instead, they can ride those waves and advance further. This is the message that the young scholar, Dr. Huynh Van Dang, wishes to convey to UIT students.
