The transition from being more "playful" than "studious" is how Cao Thi Bich Phuong (born in 2001) described her initial days stepping into university, embracing the vibrant city life. However, after a period of personal transformation, Phuong became the Female Valedictorian of the Information Security program (High-Quality Program) at the University of Information Technology (UIT) - Ho Chi Minh City National University.
Once a Girl More "Playful" than "Studious"
Choosing a major is a challenging decision for many high school students when they stand at the threshold of university life. However, for Bich Phuong, this was a relatively straightforward choice as she had identified her passion since high school. Phuong explained, "I chose the Information Security major because of my interest in exploring and experimenting with computer usage, and partly because the major sounded really cool. After starting my studies, I realized that Information Security is not only 'cool' but also very useful and fascinating. It is the right choice for personal development and contributing positively to the information security of society."
Bich Phuong explored various sources of information, carefully considered her options, and decided to entrust her youth to UIT for four years. She shared, "I chose UIT because it is one of the most prestigious universities in the country for Information Technology. I believe that with a modern learning environment, superior teaching quality, and a highly qualified faculty, UIT will be an ideal environment for me to study, conduct research, and have a good career in the future."
Entering university with many aspirations, Phuong, like many freshmen, initially fell prey to the allure of the dynamic city life, emphasizing entertainment over academic activities. The young girl, far from home for the first time, was captivated by the vibrant lifestyle, leading her to prioritize leisure activities over studies. At that time, she was more concerned about going out than engaging in academic pursuits, resulting in less-than-expected academic performance in her first year.
Conscious Change and Academic Success
Realizing that she had deviated from her path, Bich Phuong was determined to change herself. She said, "From those failures, I learned a lot about self-management, setting goals, and determination. I also learned to balance between study and other recreational activities." These setbacks contributed significantly to Phuong's personal growth, and she changed herself every day to progress quickly. On this journey, the support of teachers, friends, and family was indispensable and served as motivation for Phuong to strive forward.
"If You Want to, You Will Find a Way"
The evidence of Phuong's effort is a series of admirable achievements in both academic and extracurricular activities. Besides being the Female Valedictorian in Information Security (High-Quality Program), she repeatedly received UIT's Encouragement Scholarships. The 2001-born student became a 5-Star Student at both the Faculty and University levels for three consecutive years, achieving the title of Advanced Youth Following Uncle Ho's Words - in the field of academic study and scientific research in 2023. Additionally, Bich Phuong is passionate about sports.
To achieve impressive academic achievements, Phuong applied various study methods, such as "planning study schedules, creating a positive learning environment, prioritizing important tasks, building an effective time management plan, participating in study groups, seeking support from those around me, and maintaining a positive mindset," shared Phuong.
Starting internships in the third year, Bich Phuong accumulated considerable practical experience before graduating. Because of her strong foundation of knowledge and skills, Phuong found a job that aligned with her field of study and is determined to grow with it. She hopes to apply the knowledge gained into practice, learn from experienced colleagues, and enhance her professional knowledge and work experience daily.
From the experiences she gathered during her university studies, the young lady wants to offer advice to new students: "They should balance between studying and having fun." Phuong believes that, "If you want to, you will find a way; if you don't, you will find an excuse." With determination and genuine effort, no goal is too difficult.
