Former UIT Talent Program Student Shares His Journey of Studying in Japan & Becoming an IT Engineer in the US

17-10-2023
Ho Minh Man, a graduate in Computer Science from the UIT Talent Program in 2017, continued his educational journey by enrolling in the Science and Engineering program at Hosei University in Japan. After his time in Japan, Man decided to move to the United States in search of more fitting opportunities for his career. Let's hear about his fascinating journey: Fascination with Japanese Culture - Did you have any plans to study abroad or work in another country before? Initially, I didn't have any plans to study abroad right after graduation. It was after working for a while  in Computer Vision Engineering at EyeQ, that I met Mr. Tuan and Mr. Cat, two Ph.D. holders in Australia. They shared a lot of experiences and knowledge with me. At that point, I felt that my current knowledge was sufficient for my current tasks, but I lacked extensive research experience and in-depth knowledge in my field. That's when I decided to explore opportunities for studying abroad. Minh Man graduated in Computer Science, UIT Talent Program in 2017 -How did the opportunity to study in Japan come about? I have always dreamt of visiting Japan because I was fascinated by Japanese culture. Moreover, I had a friend who had previously studied at Hosei University. I sought advice from that friend and, after considering various factors like the facilities, the professors, the learning environment at Hosei, student employment opportunities, and financial aspects; I finally made the decision to study in Japan. Minh Man chose Japan for studying abroad - What challenges did you face while applying for scholarships? Regarding finances, before enrolling, I had to discuss the scholarship and research funding I would receive with my professor. I also had to make sure that the funding would cover my two-year master's program, including tuition fees. Additionally, international students in Japan have the opportunity to receive scholarships such as JASSO or Daddy Long Legs, specifically for Vietnamese students. The chances of getting these scholarships are quite high, and they are based on document evaluation rather than interviews, so I didn't encounter many difficulties in this regard. When I applied for the visa, the process was relatively straightforward. I waited for the university's confirmation of acceptance and then submitted the Certificate of Eligibility (COE). Afterward, I went to the embassy to submit my documents and waited for the visa processing. However, I faced language barriers while studying in Japan. In my opinion, language was the most significant obstacle to integration and personal development abroad. New Opportunities in the US - After studying in Japan, what opportunities helped you move to the United States for work? Conducting research, publishing conference and journal papers during my master's and Ph.D. studies significantly aided my job search in the US. Additionally, I had to prepare thoroughly for various types of job interviews, including coding interviews and behavioral assessments. To explore job opportunities, I looked for opening jobs on LinkedIn. I sent my CV to positions and companies that matched my interests. This approach led me to my current job. I found the job aligning well with my research interests, so I applied and have been working there ever since. He is currently living and working in the US -Did it take you a long time to decide to move to the US? It actually didn't take me long to decide to move to the US. After over three years of studying in Japan, I gradually realized that I wasn't well-suited for long-term development in Japan. It's not that Japan isn't good, but I felt that my working style didn't match the Japanese work culture. Moreover, due to my limited communication in Japanese, my career advancement opportunities were quite limited. After having the chance to converse and learn from some researchers in the US, I felt that I would have more opportunities for personal development there. The working culture also seemed to align better with my style, so I decided to move. Minh Man quickly adapted to the life in the United States -How different is the study and work environment in a foreign country compared to Vietnam? Every country has its unique academic and work environment. The work environment in Japan differs from that in Vietnam, and the US work environment is distinct from Japan's. These environments are also influenced by culture. For example, feedback and criticism in the US are very direct. Sometimes, what they say for the first time might make newcomers feel quite down. However, in Japan, when they provide feedback about your work, they start by praising your work, then point out your mistakes between the praises. This approach makes me more comfortable to receive feedbacks but can also be confusing at times. Additionally, addressing others can be significantly different between countries. -What advice do you have for students who are considering studying and working abroad? I think one of my weaknesses, and the weakness of many international students, is the lack of information and long-term planning when deciding to study abroad. If individuals consider and research more before going abroad, they would have more opportunities and a better experience. For instance, each school has different training programs, and this information is usually available on the department's website. We can check if a program aligns with their interests before making a decision. Furthermore, in postgraduate studies, especially during a Ph.D., research plays a significant role. It's crucial to find out about the school’s professors and labs to determine if their research direction aligns with your interests and goals. Financial planning is also crucial. Many schools have excellent programs and financial support for students, but this information isn't widely disseminated to students. Therefore, I advise students to explore as many opportunities as possible and choose the best one for themselves. Source: Thu Hoai Translation: Nhat Hien

We extend our heartfelt congratulations to Nguyễn Duy Hoàng, a student majoring in Information Security and a member of the InSecLab research group, for having his research paper on the application of Blockchain and Federated Learning in information security accepted at the "2023 Rivf International Conference on Computing and Communication Technologies (Rivf 2023)." The RIVF 2023 conference will take place in Hanoi in December 2023 and is hosted by Posts and Telecommunications Institute of Technology. Details of the Scientific Paper: Paper Title: “DeFL-BC: Empowering Reliable Cyberattack Detection through Decentralized Federated Learning and Poisoning Attack Defense” Student: Nguyễn Duy Hoàng - Class: Information Security 2019 – High Quality Program – Faculty of Computer Networks and Communications. Supervisors: MSc. Phan Thế Duy & MSc. Trần Tuấn Dũng General Information about RIVF Conference: The RIVF conference is an international Conference on Electronics, Communications and Information Technology, a significant global scientific gathering of researchers and scientists in the domains of computing and communications in Vietnam and around the world, embodying the theme "Research, Innovation, and Vision for the Future" (abbreviated as RIVF). The RIVF conference is listed among the prestigious conferences as proposed by SCOPUS and ISI Web of Science. RIVF has a rich history, with the 2023 event being the 16th edition. RIVF 2023 revolves around several key topics, including Image, Speech and Voice Processing, Communication & Computer Networks, Network Security, Distributed Systems, Internet of Things, Cloud Computing, Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, Big Data Analytics, Intelligent Computing, Software Engineering, Information Systems, and Computational Models. The RIVF conferences originated in 2003 through the efforts of professors Patrick Bellot, Marc Bùi, Dương Nguyên Vũ, and others in France, in collaboration with colleagues from various countries, and Professor Nguyễn Đình Trí and professors from Computer Science Institute for the Francophonie (IFI) in Hanoi. In 2007, RIVF, initially a conference in computer science organized in Vietnam by the French-speaking community, was transformed into an international conference under IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) jurisdiction, encompassing both IT&C and enhanced quality. Abstract of the Paper: “This work presents a collaborative and trust assurance model for network attack detection using Federated Learning (FL) in edge computing environments. This study leverages the capabilities of Federated Learning (FL) and blockchain technologies, specifically the Hyperledger Fabric platform, to construct a decentralized Federated Learning model, named DeFL-BC framework that can encourage contribution from the community and resist to poisoning attacks. Our framework aims to detect and prevent network attacks effectively in the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) contexts with the knowledge sharing from collaborative participants without privacy leakage. The experiments conducted on two datasets, Edge-IIoTset and CIC-IDS2018 demonstrate that the proposed framework is robust in reducing a single point of failure of the system, and showing outstanding performance under poisoning attacks when the accuracy is up to more than 90\% and addressing limited computing resources and intermittent network connectivity in cyberattack scenarios. Furthermore, the integration of blockchain technology enhances security and resilience, effectively mitigating the risks of the single point of failure in conventional FL approaches.” Link: https://rivf2023.org/ Detailed Information: https://www.facebook.com/inseclab/posts/pfbid0hKRa9Y4WQT3c3P4MC4uyAz2Xd4EgQ2GGT Hải Băng - Communication Contributor, University of Information Technology English version: Phan Huy Hoang

Chế Quang Huy - Image: NVCC Initially enrolled in the Computer Engineering program at UIT, Quang Huy later delved into selected courses from the Computer Science department during his third year. Explaining his decision to pursue a double major, Huy shared, “During my first year, I joined the CEEC academic club of the Computer Engineering department, which allowed me to explore various fields and technologies such as embedded systems, artificial intelligence, and IoT. This exposure helped me understand the interconnections and mutual support among these fields. It also led me to delve into computer vision from the beginning of my second year. Later on, I registered for several Computer Science courses to gain deeper insights into the field of computer vision. By the end of my third year, I made the decision to pursue a double major.” Not only did Quang Huy graduate with a double major, but he was also actively involved in scientific research and participated in major competitions. Remarkably, he authored multiple scientific papers, including six internationally published papers and one nationally published paper. Additionally, he represented Vietnam alongside fellow CEEC club members in the Bosch Future Mobility Challenge held in Romania in 2023. Quang Huy, along with some members of the CEEC club, represented Vietnam in the Bosch Future Mobility Challenge competition held in Romania in 2023. Huy shared that being a member of the CEEC club helped him understand the operation of various technologies, providing him with a more intuitive understanding of integrating different technologies. With the widespread application of artificial intelligence in daily life, applying AI algorithms in general and computer vision in particular to devices and embedded systems is considered a highly promising development direction. Pursuing a double major allowed Quang Huy to acquire diverse knowledge, spanning from hardware to software, enabling him to implement research ideas by combining these domains. Moreover, this academic achievement serves as a significant advantage for his future career prospects. Balancing time between two majors posed a challenging puzzle for Quang Huy. He admitted facing difficulties studying both majors in class while conducting research in the CEEC club. However, by excelling in his coursework, the knowledge gained through his club activities became a foundation, enabling him to navigate his classes more effectively. “I made an effort to attend classes regularly and master the materials, so during project phases or final exams, I wouldn’t need to spend excessive time reviewing. Fortunately, the knowledge and insights gained through my involvement with CEEC allowed me to get ahead in many subjects from both majors, making it easier for me to handle my classwork,” said Huy. Upon graduation, instead of opting for employment in various businesses like his peers, Quang Huy chose to remain at the university for further studies and research. skweak: A Python Toolkit For Applying Weak Supervision To NLP Tasks

skweak: A Python Toolkit For Applying Weak Supervision To NLP Tasks

17-10-2023
Labelled data remains a scarce resource in many practical NLP scenarios. The only available option is often to collect and annotate texts by hand, which is expensive and time-consuming. skweak is built on a very simple idea: Instead of annotating text manually, we define a set of labeling functions to automatically label our documents, and then aggregate their results to obtain a labelled version of our corpus. Weak supervision with skweak goes through the following steps: Start: Prepare the (unlabelled) corpus onto which the labelling functions will be applied. skweak is built on top of SpaCy, so you need to convert your documents into SpaCy Doc objects. Step 1: Define a range of labelling functions that will take those documents and annotate spans with labels. Those labelling functions can take a variety of forms, from handcrafted heuristics to machine learning models, gazetteers, etc. Step 2: Aggregate their results in order to obtain a single, probabilistic annotation (instead of the multiple, possibly conflicting annotations from the labelling functions). This is done in skweak using a generative model that automatically estimates the relative accuracy and possible confuctions of each labelling function. Step 3: Based on these aggregated labels, train your final NLP model. The skweak toolkit provides a Python API to apply labeling functions and aggregate their results with just a few lines of code. This toolkit can be applied to both sequence labeling and text classification and introduces features like handling underspecified labels and creating document-level labeling functions.
