The Transformation Journey of the Female Valedictorian: From "Playful" to "Scholarly"

20-12-2023
The transition from being more "playful" than "studious" is how Cao Thi Bich Phuong (born in 2001) described her initial days stepping into university, embracing the vibrant city life. However, after a period of personal transformation, Phuong became the Female Valedictorian of the Information Security program (High-Quality Program) at the University of Information Technology (UIT) - Ho Chi Minh City National University. Once a Girl More "Playful" than "Studious" Choosing a major is a challenging decision for many high school students when they stand at the threshold of university life. However, for Bich Phuong, this was a relatively straightforward choice as she had identified her passion since high school. Phuong explained, "I chose the Information Security major because of my interest in exploring and experimenting with computer usage, and partly because the major sounded really cool. After starting my studies, I realized that Information Security is not only 'cool' but also very useful and fascinating. It is the right choice for personal development and contributing positively to the information security of society." Bich Phuong explored various sources of information, carefully considered her options, and decided to entrust her youth to UIT for four years. She shared, "I chose UIT because it is one of the most prestigious universities in the country for Information Technology. I believe that with a modern learning environment, superior teaching quality, and a highly qualified faculty, UIT will be an ideal environment for me to study, conduct research, and have a good career in the future." Entering university with many aspirations, Phuong, like many freshmen, initially fell prey to the allure of the dynamic city life, emphasizing entertainment over academic activities. The young girl, far from home for the first time, was captivated by the vibrant lifestyle, leading her to prioritize leisure activities over studies. At that time, she was more concerned about going out than engaging in academic pursuits, resulting in less-than-expected academic performance in her first year. Conscious Change and Academic Success Realizing that she had deviated from her path, Bich Phuong was determined to change herself. She said, "From those failures, I learned a lot about self-management, setting goals, and determination. I also learned to balance between study and other recreational activities." These setbacks contributed significantly to Phuong's personal growth, and she changed herself every day to progress quickly. On this journey, the support of teachers, friends, and family was indispensable and served as motivation for Phuong to strive forward. "If You Want to, You Will Find a Way" The evidence of Phuong's effort is a series of admirable achievements in both academic and extracurricular activities. Besides being the Female Valedictorian in Information Security (High-Quality Program), she repeatedly received UIT's Encouragement Scholarships. The 2001-born student became a 5-Star Student at both the Faculty and University levels for three consecutive years, achieving the title of Advanced Youth Following Uncle Ho's Words - in the field of academic study and scientific research in 2023. Additionally, Bich Phuong is passionate about sports. To achieve impressive academic achievements, Phuong applied various study methods, such as "planning study schedules, creating a positive learning environment, prioritizing important tasks, building an effective time management plan, participating in study groups, seeking support from those around me, and maintaining a positive mindset," shared Phuong. Starting internships in the third year, Bich Phuong accumulated considerable practical experience before graduating. Because of her strong foundation of knowledge and skills, Phuong found a job that aligned with her field of study and is determined to grow with it. She hopes to apply the knowledge gained into practice, learn from experienced colleagues, and enhance her professional knowledge and work experience daily. From the experiences she gathered during her university studies, the young lady wants to offer advice to new students: "They should balance between studying and having fun." Phuong believes that, "If you want to, you will find a way; if you don't, you will find an excuse." With determination and genuine effort, no goal is too difficult. Title of the paper: "Fast Camera Motion Compensation Based Kalman Filter and Cascade Association for Multi-object Tracking" Paper Link: https://link.springer.com/chapter/10.1007/978-3-031-42430-4_1 Students involved: Đỗ Thanh Tùng – KTMT2019 - primary author Chế Quang Huy – KTMT2018 – co-author Supervisor: ThS. Trương Văn Cương Summary of the paper: In the realm of modern multi-object tracking, the proposed method balances the trade-off between precision and runtime. The approach divides the tracking process into two steps: the detection process to locate objects in the image and the tracking process to assign identities to each result from the object detection. In this research, the team optimizes the tracking process by generalizing the BYTE technique (Cascade Association) and integrating camera motion compensation into the Association phase. Our proposed KCM-Track tracking system establishes state-of-the-art accuracy on the MOT17 dataset using MOT's main metrics: MOTA, IDF1, and HOTA. On the MOT17 benchmark, it achieves 80.6% MOTA, 79.7% IDF1, and 64.6% HOTA while maintaining a tracking speed of 314FPS. The student expresses deep gratitude to ThS. Trương Văn Cương – the lecturer at the Faculty of Computer Science. He has been a constant companion, providing support and guidance throughout the research. He identified limitations and suggested ideas that helped them achieve positive results in this study. Thanks to him, they have been able to accumulate valuable experience and knowledge for themselves, confidently moving forward on their path. The outstanding individual in question is none other than Tran Kim Ngoc Ngan, a student in the Talented Computer Science program, majoring in Computer Science. Despite being only a second-year student, Ngoc Ngan has already had 2 papers accepted for publication at the SoICT2023 conference. She is a member of the executive board of the Wanna.W1n club, an intern at the Information Security Laboratory (InSecLab), and has achieved many commendable accomplishments. Image: Tran Kim Ngoc Ngan - NVCC. When the love for security blossoms Ngoc Ngan began her interest in information technology when exposed to the Pascal programming language in secondary school. Through the process of self-improvement, she has become increasingly fascinated by the field of computer science, especially in the area of security. According to Ngoc Ngan, becoming a member of Team Q - the Wanna.W1n club (InSecLab) has been a significant turning point in her scientific research journey: "Thanks to being selected for the club, despite the high competition rate, I had the opportunity to connect with colleagues and enthusiasts. I participated in various competitions and research projects, all thanks to the guidance of the club's advisors." Image: Ngoc Ngan's team taking a photo with mentors at InSecLab - NVCC. A brilliant journey Tran Kim Ngoc Ngan is currently a member of the executive board of the Wanna.W1n club and an intern at InSecLab. During her time at UIT, she participated in various competitions such as the Euréka semifinals, the AI Challenge HCMC 2023 finals, and the SoICT Hackathon 2023 organized by the Hanoi University of Science and Technology. In the SoICT Hackathon 2023, she competed in the AI-Powered BFIS track (Banking, Finance, Insurance, and Securities) sponsored by the Joint Stock Commercial Bank for Foreign Trade of Vietnam (Vietcombank) and won third prize. In addition, Ngoc Ngan also engaged in scientific research and co-authored 2 papers accepted for publication at the SoICT 2023 conference. For her, each research project and every signed "Tran Kim Ngoc Ngan" on competition entries represents the dedication and enthusiasm of youth. All her achievements until this moment are like "spiritual children" that she holds dear. Image: Ngoc Ngan's Doppelganger team participating in the AI Challenge HCMC 2023 finals - NVCC. Unspoken challenges "behind the glamour" To achieve the impressive accomplishments mentioned above, Ngoc Ngan had to face many trials and challenges. As a newcomer, determining the topic, handling documentation difficulties, and even the presentation style and language used in scientific research posed significant obstacles. This required Ngoc Ngan to continually learn from competition experiences and research projects, gradually overcoming her lack of experience. Image: Ngoc Ngan's Shark-eyes team participating in the Euréka semifinals - NVCC. Additionally, balancing time between study, extracurricular activities, and scientific research was a challenging task for Ngoc Ngan. She had to plan meticulously, marking tasks for each week to meet deadlines for all three areas. For example, she would dedicate time to scientific research and the club if there were no practical classes that week. Furthermore, she always focused wholeheartedly during all core study hours to effectively grasp important concepts from lecturers. For Ngoc Ngan, studying at class and conducting scientific research are equally demanding tasks, with research often taking precedence. The "rose" amidst the computer science community As a female student in information technology, Ngoc Ngan has experienced moments of overwhelm and occasional pressure due to perceived inferiority to male counterparts. However, she doesn't believe that being a "woman" puts her at a disadvantage, especially at UIT. "In research groups, being the youngest, I receive a lot of care and attention from teachers and seniors. Not only that, at school, our girls often receive more attention from lecturers and senior students than boys." Ngoc Ngan shared, "In the Talented Science program, there are only 5 female students, but the class size is up to 30 students! Initially, I was worried about not fitting in because of the few female students, but over time, I got used to it. Our girls never lack gifts on holidays, and we receive many privileges every day, so there's nothing to fear. I am very grateful to everyone around me who has helped make my learning environment so wonderful." Image: Ngoc Ngan participating in the AI Challenge finals with Team Q - Wanna.W1n - NVCC. After the achievements Ngoc Ngan has attained, the first people she expresses gratitude to are her family - a solid spiritual support always encouraging and supporting her in terms of both health and mental well-being. Alongside this, she deeply thanks the "beloved home InSecLab" - a place that has accompanied and supported her during this period, and the Wanna.W1n club - a place that always provides opportunities for her to participate in various competitions and scientific research projects. Above all, she sincerely appreciates those who have consistently supported and encouraged Trần Kim Ngoc Ngan on this challenging yet joyful scientific research journey. Brief summary of Tran Kim Ngoc Ngan's achievements: Member of the executive board of the Wanna.W1n club. Intern at the Information Security Laboratory (InSecLab). Participated in the Euréka semifinals. Participated in the AI Challenge HCMC 2023 finals. Won third prize in SoICT Hackathon 2023 organized by the Hanoi University of Science and Technology - AI-Powered BFIS track sponsored by Vietcombank. Co-authored 2 papers accepted for publication at the SoICT 2023 conference. Paper Title: “TrustFedHealth: Federated Learning with Homomorphic Encryption and Blockchain for Heart Disease Prediction in Smart Healthcare” Student Contributors: Bùi Tấn Hải Đăng (Talent - Information Security 2020) Phan Hữu Luân (High Quality - Information Security 2020.1) Vương Đinh Thanh Ngân (High Quality - Information Security ATCL2020.1) Supervisors: TS. Phạm Văn Hậu ThS Phan Thế Duy Paper Summary: In recent years, advances in the Internet of Medical Things (IoMT) or smart devices have enabled automatic human health monitoring. The use of smart healthcare devices can not only reduce the burden on hospitals but also save costs, travel time, and provide home-based disease diagnosis, such as stroke rates. IoMT generates a large amount of data that can be used to train machine learning (ML) models for accurate disease diagnosis. However, data used to train ML models is often privacy-preserving, making sharing difficult and requiring high security. To overcome this challenge, this paper proposes a collaborative framework called TrustFedHealth to train heart disease prediction models based on ML. TrustFedHealth uses Federated Learning (FL) to enable training with decentralized data stored separately on multiple machines. Additionally, Mobile Edge Computing (MEC) is integrated into the model as a solution to optimize communication time between different elements of the system and reduce congestion. Homomorphic Encryption (HE) is also combined with FL to protect the security of model updates between client and aggregate server. Furthermore, Blockchain (BC) is leveraged to address the traceability of contributions and ensure the transparency of model updates. Through evaluation results on the MIT-BIH Arrhythmia Database from Physionet, TrustFedHealth provides a promising method for training ML-based heart disease prediction models while maintaining privacy and security. "We would like to express our gratitude to Dr. Phạm Văn Hậu and Mr. Phan Thế Duy for their dedicated support and assistance throughout our research."
