The Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST) Welcomes Students from VNU-HCM for Collaboration

On the afternoon of December 8th, at VNU-HCM's Headquarters, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Vu Hai Quan - Chancellor of VNU-HCM, welcomed Dr. Yoon Seok-jin - President of the Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST), along with the delegation, to discuss potential collaboration opportunities between KIST and VNU-HCM in the near future.

Founded in 1966, KIST is the first multi-disciplinary science and technology research institute in South Korea, making significant contributions to the country's economic development. President Yoon Seok-jin stated that KIST currently has a total of 25 research institutes, 15 of which have branched out from KIST, playing crucial roles in Korea's economic development.

KIST's goal is to conduct sustainable research, with a focus on climate change adaptation, health sciences, and human-related studies in the future. President Yoon Seok-jin noted the similar roles of VNU-HCM and KIST in national development, scientific research, and technology advancement.

He proposed a collaboration direction where VNU-HCM sends its postgraduate students and researchers to KIST. Currently, there are over 100 Vietnamese postgraduate students and researchers at KIST, with 30 of them coming from Vietnam. However, only one student is from VNU-HCM. President Yoon Seok-jin expects VNU-HCM to send more students to KIST, and KIST is committed to training them to become excellent scientists who can contribute to Vietnam upon their return.

Currently, KIST supports expenses for international students to some extent, aiming to facilitate their adaptation and, most importantly, actively engage them in research activities. President Yoon Seok-jin believes that pursuing master's and doctoral degrees at KIST is more effective than studying at Korean universities because it is a direct research institute.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Vu Hai Quan, the Chancellor of VNU-HCM, stated that this working session with President Yoon Seok-jin is an opportunity for KIST and VNU-HCM to collectively think about solutions to enhance their collaborative relationship for the expected efficiency. VNU-HCM wishes to connect with KIST in various research directions, including new energy, health sciences, artificial intelligence, biotechnology, and sustainable development issues in the Mekong Delta region.
