Vehicle re-identification (Re-ID) is a key component of intelligent transportation systems, enabling continuous tracking of vehicles across non-overlapping camera views. Most existing models are trained on curated benchmarks and often fail in real-world traffic with high density, heterogeneous vehicle types, occlusion, and challenging imaging conditions.
This work introduces a real-time multi-camera tracking framework tailored for Vietnamese urban traffic. The pipeline integrates a YOLO-based detector with Deep SORT for intra-camera tracking and employs a state-of-the-art backbone (OSNet) with a novel cross-camera association algorithm to maintain vehicle identity across disjoint views. The system is deployed on Apache Spark and Apache Kafka, supporting scalable, low-latency processing of multiple concurrent video streams.
Evaluation on a 20-second Vietnamese traffic video achieves a recall of 83.34%, a precision of 55.56%, and an average throughput of approximately 11 FPS. Furthermore, the study introduces the first annotated dataset for vehicle Re-ID in Vietnamese traffic, carefully labeled to reflect real-world complexity and diversity.
The main contributions include:
(1) a practical vehicle Re-ID solution customized for Vietnamese traffic conditions;
(2) a novel cross-camera association method that improves identity preservation in dense and dynamic environments;
(3) a scalable real-time processing pipeline suitable for large-scale transportation networks.
