The most profound saying of Nguyen Cong Phi (2001), the top graduate of the Faculty of Software Engineering in 2023 at the VNU-HCM University of Information Technology, is, "Your future is determined by yourself." Passionate about technology since early high school, Phi, through persistent efforts, graduated from his dream university with impressive achievements.
Pursuing Technology to Make a Difference in Life
Introduced to coding through Pascal programming language lessons, Nguyen Cong Phi developed a love for this challenging language. His greatest desire in pursuing a software engineering education was to create applications that could make a positive impact on people's lives. Phi shared, "For the Software Engineering field, I learned more specialized knowledge and software development techniques compared to other fields, such as building, operating, maintaining, and even developing games, so I can apply a lot in practice."
Portrait of a Code Enthusiast from the First Encounter
In the pursuit of his passion, Phi faced challenges such as financial issues, numerous and demanding deadlines, and the need for significant time and effort to complete tasks. Especially, Phi started his studies at UIT during the severe outbreak of COVID-19, requiring him to adapt to a new learning environment while dealing with the pandemic. Despite moments of fatigue and discouragement, these challenges served not to deter Phi but to motivate him to become stronger and more resilient. The wholehearted support and guidance from teachers added to the strength that propelled Phi forward on his journey. Furthermore, the young man received immense support from his family and friends, becoming a tremendous source of strength.
Regarding his choice of UIT for his four-year university journey, Phi stated, "For me, UIT is an excellent environment for developing both knowledge and practical skills. The university specializes in Information Technology, so I felt confident choosing it as the place to invest four years of my youth."
Effective Learning Methods: The Key to Success
To achieve high academic results, Phi continuously experimented with different learning methods to find the most effective one for himself. He tried techniques ranging from the Pomodoro technique (simply breaking tasks into intervals and working during those intervals) to mind mapping and pre-reading course materials before lectures. Ultimately, he found that staying focused during class was crucial. Setting realistic goals and avoiding distractions were also effective measures to stick to his plans.
Additionally, given the nature of the Software Engineering field, which requires completing numerous projects, honing teamwork skills is essential. Phi shared, "The important thing after each teamwork session is to learn from it, to see the strengths and weaknesses of oneself to improve."
Phi's Efforts and Achievements: A Graduation to Remember
With relentless efforts, Cong Phi achieved admirable academic results. Besides being the top graduate of the Software Engineering Department, he received the Excellent Scholarship for two consecutive semesters and achieved a TOEIC score of 875.
In his early years, Phi dedicated his time to studying, researching, and acquiring necessary skills. In the fourth year, he started interning at a software company. "I spent my day working at the company and evenings and weekends on research, studying, and completing assignments and projects. Working also provided me with more knowledge and experience, making studying and researching more practical."
Phi's dedication to learning and continuous efforts led to numerous successes during his university years. When asked for advice for young people pursuing a similar field, he said, "I want to advise young people to try many things and study a lot. Explore to find the most suitable learning and research methods for yourself. Also, actively participate in activities to make more friends for mutual support during challenging times."
