With outstanding performance in previous rounds, the UIT.KNS.Love_is_pain team officially registered as one of the five representatives from the University of Information Technology, Vietnam National University - Ho Chi Minh City (UIT), for the ICPC Asia Hue City 2023 competition from December 6th to 8th, 2023.
UIT.KNS.Love_is_pain is composed of three freshmen: Tran Vinh Khanh, Nguyen Thien Nhan, and Nguyen Thai Son, all students in the Talent Program majoring in Computer Science.
Sharing the serendipity of forming the group, Thai Son said: "At the beginning of the academic year, the university organized the 'UIT ALGO BOOTCAMP 2023' summer camp for students with national and international achievements. We all participated in the program, and after several conversations, we felt compatible, sharing similar study methods, perspectives, and interests, so the group was formed from there." Not only that, all three members share a passion for the ICPC competition, desiring to test their abilities and compete in programming contests to gain more knowledge and skills for personal development.
Becoming one of the five representative teams from UIT in the ICPC international round is not surprising for the team because it was their initial goal, and they continuously strived to achieve it. This journey is eagerly anticipated, but it also brings pressure since they are only freshmen and lack experience. However, compensating for the lack of experience, the team has a strong competitive spirit. Thai Son shared, "I think freshmen have a stronger competitive spirit, although there is pressure regarding achievements, it is not as intense as for the seniors because the team still has many opportunities."
In the previous rounds, the UIT.KNS.Love_is_pain team solved 11 out of 13 problems.
Throughout the competition journey, the team faced various challenges, especially in terms of time management and distributing the computer usage time among team members. Son mentioned that each member of the group has their own opinions, so sometimes finding a common voice is challenging. However, aiming for the common goal of ICPC, the team calmly chose the best solution for problem-solving. Challenges such as algorithmic game theory and geometry in ICPC exams also posed difficulties for the team, consuming a lot of discussion time. To address these issues, the team practiced together extensively and prepared more thoroughly. Thien Nhan shared, "Our team came up with a solution by having two people do the main coding, while the remaining person serves as an advisor to prevent any disagreements."
To prepare for the upcoming competition, the UIT.KNS.Love_is_pain team has devised various strategies and enhanced their knowledge during each training session. In addition to self-training, UIT and the professors have provided significant support to the ICPC teams, and the team has also learned from other representatives of UIT in this competition. The goal of the UIT.KNS.Love_is_pain team in the upcoming competition is to achieve the highest possible position.
On December 6, 2023, at the University of Sciences, Hue University officially opened the 32nd Vietnam Student Informatics Olympics (OLP’23), Procon Vietnam, and the ICPC Asia Hue City 2023 International Student Programming Contest.
