Congratulation to Hieu and Ho!
The two contestants received their 2nd prize for the Awesome Prize Idea at the “Application of Digital Technology in publicizing and educating a Traffic Safety issue” Contest.
Nguyen Quang Hieu and Ho Dang Thanh Ho from UIT’s Computer Science Faculty, excellently put forward their idea and persuaded judges to win the prize. The best idea was for a product named: “Road condition monitoring System based on camera data for surveillance and warn”
The Contest was organized on the collaboration between the Agency for Southern Affairs of the Science and Technology Ministry and Ho Chi Minh City Youth Union.
Roads is one of the most popular modes of transport in Vietnam. Out of driving habits, vehicle conditions, road surface condition is the key component to ensure safe road to drivers. Degradation of road surface which is severely manifested by cracks, pot-holes, rutting and shoving, deterioration, and local deformations is the consequence of road traffic accidents. Motorists who fail to spot a pot-hole and steer around it can lose their control, wobble, have-to-deviate from their path and swerve their motorcycle that leads to accidents. According to a report from the Vietnam Business Forum 2019, it was counted within 100 kilometer length of the National Highway Route 1 connecting Binh Dinh and Phu Yen Provinces, 5200 lethal pot-holes of all sizes were spotted there just at the beginning of the year. For this reason, the contestants proposed the idea in which a monitoring system was developed to analyze road surface conditions in Vietnam. The product operated on the obtained data from stereo cameras and then applied AI platform to perform its tasks. The system can work when it is placed on specialized vehicles to carry out its analysis and do statistic works of road surface conditions. The statistical results would be for the authorities to do road reporting, operation and periodic maintenance. In addition, by developing iOT devices attached on the roof of the specialized vehicles, it can be helpful to navigate and alert road defects on their journey.
