A group of students from the University of Information Technology has clinched the first prize in the ASEAN Cyber Shield hacking competition, earning a reward of $20,000 (almost 500 million VND).

Four third-year students majoring in Information Security at the VNUHCM - University of Information Technology emerged victorious. The winning team consists of Nguyen Dang Nguyen, Phan Vinh Khang, To Dinh Nguyen, and Le Khac Trung Nam.

According to Dr. Nguyen Tan Tran Minh Khang, Vice President of the University of Information Technology, the $20,000 prize is the highest value ever secured by the university's students in various competitions.

The ASEAN Cyber Shield (ACS) 2023 competition, aimed at discovering and nurturing cybersecurity talent, was organized in collaboration with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). The total prize pool for the competition was $77,000. This year's event took place in Jakarta, Indonesia, from November 21 to November 24. Thirty-seven teams from 10 countries in the region competed in two categories: the General category, open to various participant groups, and the Student category, specifically for university students.

In the first round, teams were challenged on specific topics, with the top five teams from each category advancing. The second round involved attack and defense scenarios. Organizers simulated real-life hacking situations where participants, acting as security specialists, had to defend against external attacks while ensuring the system's functionality.

The University of Information Technology's student team secured the first prize in the General category. Additionally, two other Vietnamese representatives, Duy Tan University and Hanoi University of Science and Technology, claimed the second prize in the General category and the first prize in the Student category, respectively.
