Reversing the Course of History - Memories of Dien Bien: A Decision - The Decision to Win Dien Bien Phu

In the memoir "Dien Bien Phu, a historical rendezvous," General Vo Nguyen Giap wrote: "On that day (January 26, 1954), I made the most difficult decision of my commanding life, which was to change the combat strategy: From 'strike fast, resolve quickly' to 'strike firmly, advance firmly.' This is considered a historic decision in a historic campaign..." That "most difficult decision" turned the tide of history, helping us gain the initiative both intellectually and physically against the enemy, achieving a "glorious victory that resonated across five continents, shaking the globe."

The principle of "strike firmly, advance firmly" means being proactive in deciding when and where to strike; to strike when needed and rest when necessary; to hold onto territories we can and let go of those we cannot. This method of combat is in line with the principles of strategic command and is suitable for the capabilities of our armed forces. It allows us to concentrate absolute superiority in troops and firepower in each battle, ensuring victory in every combat. With this method, we can minimize the enemy's strengths, such as their large numbers and strong firepower, while exploiting their greatest weakness, which is their vulnerability when surrounded and isolated, facing difficulties in logistics and reinforcements.
