Victim mentality is a term in psychology that refers to a type of dysfunctional thinking. Individuals with a victim mentality often believe that life is inherently unfair and consistently blame circumstances or others when things don't go as expected.
People with a victim mentality often feel as if bad things are constantly happening to them, and that everyone is against them, whether it be family, friends, or colleagues.
The tendency to blame others and believe that negative experiences are caused by the environment or other people is prevalent. Even when they understand they are wrong, they use strong language to defend themselves. At the same time, they refuse to take responsibility and always find excuses to avoid addressing the issue. Their attitude is often, "I am not at fault; the world out there is to blame."
While it may be understandable why you became someone with a victim mentality after experiencing painful events, the truth is there are always many factors involved in any bad situation. Although you may not control what happened to you in the past, you can still exert some control over what happens to you in the present and future.
It's okay to feel bad about what has happened, but you need to stop self-pity and strive for change and healing. Otherwise, the feeling of victimhood and helplessness will follow you throughout your life.
