Engineers at the startup Cognition Labs have just launched Devin, an AI tool with the ability to automatically write code. It is a step ahead compared to Microsoft and GitHub's assistant Copilot as it can complete a project without human intervention.
In a video, CEO of Cognition Labs, Scott Wu, demonstrated the code editing steps and Devin's workflow when it performs programming projects and data research. After receiving a request, Devin will "scour" the internet, find training materials to learn how to work and handle errors encountered during the technical process. If desired, Devin users can intervene.
Cognition, an AI technology startup in the US, unveiled the world's first AI software named Devin, reported by Interesting Engineering on March 13. "Devin is a talented and tireless teammate, ready to work with you or complete tasks for you to evaluate. With Devin, engineers can focus on more interesting issues, technical teams can strive for more ambitious goals," Cognition said.
Before Devin, the world had AI software technical assistants such as Github Copilot and large language models (LLMs) like ChatGPT or Google's Bard. However, Devin is significantly different because it can handle the entire development process from start to finish.
Devin can write initial code, check errors, fix errors, and even manage projects on platforms like Upwork. Thus, engineers will have a fully capable AI employee to participate in projects instead of an assistant who can only suggest code snippets. Currently, Devin is not widely available and is only provided to selected customers.
