Recently, MAPR 2023 took place in Quy Nhon, Vietnam, organized by VNUHCM-University of Information Technology (UIT). Many UITer had the opportunity to participate in this international scientific conference. Let's explore how these UITer felt about their participation in the conference.
MAPR 2023, the sixth international conference on Multimedia Analysis and Pattern Recognition, gathered professors, associate professors, researchers, graduate students, and students from countries such as the United States, France, Malaysia, Japan, and Vietnam. The conference received 69 submissions and accepted 36 papers, authored by 145 authors. This event provided a precious opportunity for UIT students to meet, learn from experienced experts, and share their research experiences within the global research community. Let's hear the UITer' perspectives on MAPR 2023.
The international scientific conference MAPR 2023 was held in Quy Nhon
Excitement, joy, and enthusiasm were the emotions expressed by Nguyen Hieu Nghia (lecturer at the Faculty of Information Science and Engineering), Quan Chi Khanh An (alumnus, lecturer at the Faculty of Software Engineering), and Nguyen Thanh Nhan (alumnus, PhD student in Information Technology) when asked about their feelings participating in MAPR 2023. For Hieu Nghia, he said, "The MAPR conference this year invited Professor Junichi Tsujii, a leading AI expert from Japan with significant influence on global NLP research, to share his knowledge." As for Thanh Nhan, the joy felt like it doubled as the conference was held in Quy Nhon, his hometown.
Nguyen Hieu Nghia raises discussion questions during the conference
Like in previous years, this conference featured multiple sessions, allowing participants to directly share opinions and receive feedback from experts. Speaking about his favorite part of the conference, Khanh An expressed, "I particularly enjoyed the Poster Session of the conference because I could share my ideas with people in the same field, receiving opinions and suggestions for future development."
Khanh An is discussing with experts on the issues he is researching
Although not their first experience in scientific reporting, all three UITers felt a mix of nervousness, pride, and excitement. They were nervous standing before experienced experts, proud and excited to share their ideas and receive feedback, contributing to the quality and clarity of their papers and future research plans.
Reflecting on their time at the conference, Hieu Nghia shared, "I learned a lot from the speakers at MAPR this year. First and foremost, I learned how to structure my presentation, organize the content, emphasize essential points, and quickly cover less critical aspects. Secondly, I learned to have a visionary approach to research." Similar to Hieu Nghia, Khanh An and Thanh Nhan expressed that they gained comprehensive insights and expanded their knowledge on related topics from international speakers. Moreover, through discussions with other researchers, they learned and received valuable contributions on potential directions for their research topics, encouraging them to connect with real-world applications and future developments. Currently, Hieu Nghia is researching the Multimodal Learning problem in Vietnamese, Thanh Nhan is pursuing research in the intersection of IoT, Machine Learning, and Healthcare, while Khanh An is focusing on the field of Computer Vision.
Nguyen Thanh Nhan presenting his research at the conference
During this international scientific conference, all three UITer students received significant support and research inspiration from their professors at the University of Information Technology. These professors laid the foundation and provided guidance for their research journeys. The professors emphasized self-study skills, enabling the students to independently solve problems and gain a deeper understanding of the issues they were pursuing. Hieu Nghia added, "Our professors have significant research achievements and are highly supportive in encouraging student research participation, providing assistance, and guiding students throughout the research and thesis process."
Regarding their future plans, Nghia, An, and Nhan affirmed that they would strive to enhance their skills and dedicate themselves to their ongoing research. Hieu Nghia emphasized, "The problem I am currently working on is quite new, especially concerning the Vietnamese language (even in comparison to English and Chinese). Therefore, there are many foundational aspects to be built before conducting systematic and precise research on this problem. In the future, I plan to promote the development and publication of new datasets and focus on developing Large Multimodal Models (LMMs) as a foundation for future research on Multimodal Learning." For Thanh Nhan, he stated, "I will continue to develop my reported topic at the MAPR conference by delving deeper into the problem, exploring all aspects of the issue to increase the quality of my work, and contributing my modest achievements to the community."
