Chancellor of VNUHCM Lists 3 Requirements for developing Strong Research Group

This is the directive of Assoc. Prof. Dr. Vu Hai Quan - Chancellor of Viet Nam National University Ho Chi Minh City, at the seminar "The role of Strong Research Group (SRG) in the Development Strategy of Viet Nam National University Ho Chi Minh City in the period 2021-2030, 2045 vision”, held on the morning of October 19 at the headquarters of VNUHCM.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Vu Hai Quan stated that there are three crucial issues in developing the SRG at VNUHCM in the period 2021-2030. Firstly, he hopes that the Science and Technology Department and scientists will propose policies to address issues related to procedures and finances when conducting research. Secondly, he believes it's time for the member schools of VNUHCM to formulate recruitment plans, specific development pathways to attract outstanding young scientists.

Finally, he discussed the importance of scientists providing specialized reports on practical social issues, human aspects, culture, healthcare, etc., in addition to publishing scientific papers, inventions, and innovations.

"I hope that in the next 5-10 years, we will be announcing distinctive and prestigious products for VNUHCM. These products may not need to be published but it must be invested in the long term," said the Chancellor of VNUHCM.

According to Assoc. Prof. Dr. Phan Thanh Binh - former Chancellor of VNUHCM, the three issues raised by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Vu Hai Quan are very relevant to the SRG. To implement these points, Mr. Binh made several suggestions, including the need for specific strategies regarding the development of SRG at VNUHCM. SRG need to form research philosophies, establish new research groups, and operate as a team towards the general goals, not just as a working group.

In conclusion, Prof. Dr Tran Linh Thuoc – Vice-Chancellor of the Science and Studies Council of VNUHCM, stated, "In the next phase, we will continue the activities of the SRG to effectively exploit the mechanisms recognized in Government Decree 109. Moreover, VNUHCM will review proposals related to interdisciplinary research programs to select tasks that align with the VNUHCM's direction and make efficient use of funding."

At the seminar, participants listened to two presentations: Conditions for Forming SRG and Proposals by Prof. Dr. Phan Bach Thang - Director of the Center for Molecular and Nanoarchitecture(now is the Center for Innovative Materials and Architectures), and Current Situation and Development Plan of SRG at VNUHCM by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Lam Quang Vinh – Director of the Science and Technology Department.
